I don’t know if anyone will care about this, but I thought I’d give a little more info: the soprano and alto saxes are both only played in a section of Act 1 (so they can be packed at intermission); the bass clarinet in Reed 1 only plays one short interlude in Act 2. Also, Reed 1 is quite evenly split between flute and clarinet (unlike other Disney shows which are very flute heavy). Reed 2 is oboe and clarinet heavy with a bit of Eng hn (and the alto parts in Act 1 are pretty nice); Reed 3 is bassoon heavy with some important clarinet duets and one short and easy (but important) clarinet solo; the bass clarinet has some nice parts but you need a Good bassoon player for this book.
May I ask what the Reed arrangement was in the Ghostlight Records CD that was just released? Or is it the same as either the Papermill or the La Jolla Playhouse? If so, are there two Bass Clarinets or one?
On the CD for the 1999 Production of “Der Glockner Von Notre Dame”, the Reeds are listed as:
1 Flute / Piccolo
1 Oboe / English Horn
1 Clarinet / Alto Saxophone / Flute / Piccolo / Electronic Wind Instrument
1 Clarinet / Bass Clarinet / Tenor Saxophone / Oboe / English Horn
1 Clarinet / Bariton Saxophone
1 Bassoon
Is this the same as the actual production at the Berlin Theatre?
The piccolo credit on reed 3 is a mistake: there was no piccolo in that book (neither on the CD nor in the pit).
On the CD they used two different players for clarinet/baritone sax and bassoon. In they pit they were played by one player.
Otherwise the reed parts were exactly the same. The CD does have a lot of added brass, strings and percussion
By the way, where were you able to get this information if I may ask?
As a fan of the original orchestrations for this show, I’ve been digging through the web for a long time for information regarding how many instruments(and how many of each instrument) are used, so I can learn for when I try to orchestrate for my own shows!
I’m particularly looking for the number of strings there are(how many Violins, Violas, Cellos, Basses, etc.), the type of keyboard settings there are(Piano, Organ, Synthesizer, etc.), and the type of drum and percussion instruments are used(Timpani, Cymbals, Snare, Bass Drum, etc. ).
Hello! I was asked to perform this musical this spring, but might need to commit before I see the music. I have a few questions about the reed 1 part that will help me make up my mind.
On the MTI website, the instrumentation for reed 1 is only Flute, Clarinet, Piccolo, Soprano Sax, and NO Bass Clarinet. Is that a different arrangement than the one this thread is referring to? The conductor for the pit orchestra also told me Fl, Cl, Pic, SS (didn’t mention B.Cl). Is there actually a bass clarinet part (reed 1) that is not listed on MTI for some reason (I’ll need to acquire one if there is)? Has the score perhaps changed since this thread was started in 2014?
Does anybody know the rough ranges in the part? I am mostly curious about clarinet (reed 1) because I am not very solid in my high altissimo register yet (above F6), so if it hangs out above that very much I might not be able to take on the show. I’d also like to know whether piccolo reaches any high B’s or C’s (I need to practice a very specific regimine starting now to control those notes by the show if I need them)?
Added based on information received from Terry Halvorson.
Update: the bass sax in reed 3 was changed to bari.
Updated. Thank you!

Paper Mill Playhouse location added based on information received from Lawrence Rhodes.
Paper Mill Playhouse version moved to its own listing.
I was hired for Bass Sax and glad I didn’t have to lug it to the gig. Clarinet is very important as well as a bit of Bass Clarinet & Bari.

Right?
Thank you very much for responding!

This is probably getting somewhat off-topic, but the original pit orchestration was:
5 reeds
2 trumpets
2 horns
trombone/euphonium
bass trombone/tuba
2 percussion
4 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 contrabass
2 keyboards
harp/3rd keyboard
For the CD they used
12 violins, 6 violas, 6 cellos, 3 basses
2 extra horns
for some tracks: 2 extra percussionists, a 3rd trombone and a tuba

Nevermind! I just found the ‘other versions’ of this show and found the answer to my first paragraph.
