Reed 2 is a hoot, reminding me why I bought a bari.
The book has a couple of low As, but they are easily worked around.
The minor amount of flute music is mostly doubled, and a small production could easily cover all of it with a keyboard. Clarinet is even less important. The last 8 bars of “Timeless” (and the reprise) is a nice little duet with flute on reed 1 and clarinet on reed 2.
The 2 bars of alto sax in reed 2 are inaudible, and can be played on bari.
Updated per information received from Bob Gray
Updated per information received from Donica Larson
From Donica’s email: Reed 2 calls for only 2 bars of alto saxophone.
Updated per information received from Mila Weiss
From Mila’s email: both books call for “a little” improvisation.
The two bars of alto sax in reed must be a misprint. Reed 1 is playing flute at that point so it’s easy for the two players to swap parts

Updated to include low A baritone on book 2. Thanks!
The Hairspray tour has one reed book (Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax).
I am currently the reed player for the 2021 national tour.
Hope this helps in the future!!
