  1. Bret Pimentel says:

Contributor Scott Kaplan indicates that reed 1 has “only 9 measures of tenor recorder … and it can be played on alto recorder – only goes down to second space A.”

Could anyone comment on the reed 2 book contents and rank the instruments in order of importance/percentage of book? How much clarinet in reed 1?

      • Tom Kmiecik says:

The Reed 2 book spends about equal amount of time on flute, clarinet, and oboe. There’s less English horn than fl/clar/ob, and very little recorder. If you wanted percentages, maybe 28% each for flute/clarinet/oboe, 15% English horn, and 1% recorder would be a good estimate.

Reed 1 is on flute/piccolo for the majority of the show, and most of the clarinet parts in that book are when Reed 2 is on oboe or English horn.

Updated based on a comment by Tom Kmiecik. (The comments above were for a previous rental version and may no longer apply.)

  3. Cameron McCulloch says:

The Reed 1 book in the current rental version (2013 orchestration)contains only 2 bars of Alto Recorder in the 2nd act with a written alternate for Piccolo. Worth noting that the recorder part is in F rather than in concert pitch (ie. the recorder is in G major while the piccolo alternate is in C major).

How much would be missed in the reed 2 part with bass clarinet that only goes to E-flat?
