  1. Updated per information received from Sarah Dale

  2. SaxDoubler says:

Reed 1 book is flute lead, soprano & alto lead. Some high clarinet required. Reed 2 book is clarinet lead, 2nd alto some flute, little soprano. Reed 3 book is clarinet/tenor split with some piccolo (not too difficult).

Just how much clarinet is there in the Reed 1 book? I’m gonna be conducting this show this summer, and I’m trying to find out what level of quality would be needed on clarinet for this book as I’m putting together the orchestra.

  3. Bret Pimentel says:

Information on low extensions for bass clarinet and baritone saxophone on reed 4 submitted by Dave Fox.

  4. Chris Mike says:

Reed I has piccolo listed but contains no actual piccolo parts.

  5. Frank Capoferri says:

Addition… book 1 includes piccolo. You won’t see it until the finale at the top of where the horn list is but at the change in the finale it says “to flute”. An editing error most likely but if you play the ink you won’t need piccolo the entire book.

    Hope that’s useful!

    • Bret Pimentel says:

If I’m understanding correctly from Frank’s and Chris’s comments, the finale lists piccolo among the instruments needed for that number, but doesn’t have a “To Piccolo” indication anywhere in the actual notation. Hard to know where the editing error is, in the instrument listing or in the notation, but I’m inclined to settle a dispute in favor of the notation. And since my basic principle here is to list what the doubler needs to bring to the gig, I’m going to leave piccolo off the Reed 1 book for now, as it appears it can be played on flute without ill effect. However, the MTI website does indicate piccolo for this book, and if the book error gets fixed or if someone wants to make an argument for piccolo, say, from an orchestration standpoint, then I’ll update. Thanks!
